Testing & Quality Assurance
Institute of Materials’ Engine Oil Collection
An exacting collection process is followed by IOM trained collectors living in the countries from where collections are made, to ensure only the carefully selected brands, viscosity grades and service classifications are obtained. Oil collections are conducted annually.
Ensuring Data Quality
IOM inspects each engine oil, then assigns it a blind-code sample ID to eliminate any brand perception biases.
Samples are sent to pre-selected independent laboratories that specialize in lubricant testing and are:
- Recognized leaders in the industry
- ISO 9001 Quality Management System Certified
- ISO/IEC 17025:2005 Accredited
- Participants in the ASTM Proficiency Testing Program for engine oils
Oil Testing Standards
The IOM Matrix tests are conducted on each oil in an identical manner to enable direct comparison between samples throughout the year and with previous years.
IOM cross-checks against industry bench test specifications. Re-testing is conducted on any samples which fall out of specification. Both original and re-run results are reported for data confirmation.
Certain tests and samples are also randomly selected for re-testing to ensure repeatability and reproducibility of test results.
Engine Oil Data Integrity
Custom designed computer applications have been developed by IOM to minimize human error.
Data is reviewed by industry experts prior to publication.
