IOM Collectors ship new, unopened containers
of engine oil purchased at retail venues across the globe to our
world headquarters in Midland, Michigan, USA. Once received,
containers are inspected for any possible damage or cross
contamination. A minimum of five quarts/liters of each sample
is purchased and product ID numbers are checked to ensure
that packages are identical. Samples are cataloged and each
is assigned a laboratory sample ID code which contains no
reference to brand or manufacturer. Photos are taken of original
containers which are digitally filed.
Oil Testing Standards
Once the cataloging process is complete, three liters of
each oil sample is poured into a new container and labeled
with the laboratory sample ID code. Approximately 10 to 15
individual samples are sent simultaneously to a laboratory
specializing in lubricant testing. Each set of samples also
includes a reference sample which allows us to monitor consistency
in laboratory testing procedures. All samples go through the
IOM Test Matrix and are tested in an identical manner to enable
direct comparison between samples. As test results are reported,
the IOM information management system cross-checks against
ASTM J-300 and ILSAC GF-4 bench test specifications. Re-testing
is electronically scheduled for any samples which fall out
of specification. Certain tests and samples are also randomly
selected for re-testing to ensure
repeatability and reproducibility of test results. |
IOM Engine Oil Text Matrix
The IOM Text Matrix consists of all the bench tests required
to categorize the engine oil for meeting various North American
and international standards. Bench tests such as the viscosity-dependent
Fuel Efficiency Index (V-FEI), Viscosity Loss Profile, Phosphorus
Emission Index (PEI) and other advanced measures of engine
oil performance are also included.

Laboratory data is uploaded into the IOM information
management system, and electronically translated into IOM
Primary Reports. Custom designed computer applications have
been developed by IOM to minimize human error. Data is reviewed
by a management team prior to publication. As data
is approved for publication, it is uploaded to the IOM
Data Store where it is now available for purchase online.
