Engine Oil Fuel Efficiency Index
One of the most pressing needs in the development of new automobiles is increasing the level of fuel efficiency. Government mandates are growing increasingly severe. Viscosity of the engine oil is not only a primary source of lubrication for the engine – it is also a source of friction that absorbs considerable engine power and thus reduces fuel efficiency.
For a number of years the automotive industry has been pressing for more fuel-efficient engine oils to help improve fuel efficiency. The IOM database on engine oils includes an index capable of measuring the engine oil’s viscous contribution to fuel efficiency. This index provides a way to quickly compare the behavior of oils all over the world in regard to how much they affect the engine’s ability to reduce fuel consumption.
